The palatine tonsils are lymph tissues located on the side walls of our jaws. They produce antibodies that capture and protect the body against germs such as bacteria and viruses that enter our body through the air and food we breathe.
Inflammatory diseases of the tonsils are called tonsillitis. Acute and chronic forms are distinguished. Frequent repetition of inflammatory processes leads to growth of palatine tonsils and hypertrophy of the tonsils. These diseases are children's age group diseases as well as adults. Pathological processes in the tonsils can also be a manifestation of many infectious and systemic diseases of the body. During the diagnosis, accurate history collection, pharyngoscopy, general blood analysis, streptococcal antibody analysis, etc. is needed
In what situations is tonsillectomy performed:
To prescribe tonsillectomy surgery, the doctor relies on strict guidelines. Parents are worried about surgical intervention citing the weakening of their child's immune system. This worry is not without reason. The tonsils act as the main safety gate in the throat and are involved in the development of immunity. However, it should be noted that the chronic condition of the tonsils is no longer able to do this job and becomes a home for infection in the body. It should also be remembered that xr. Besides tonsillitis being a serious disease, peritonsillar rheumatism, abscess disease, heart and kidney complications are dangerous.
Currently, there is no evidence of immunosuppression after tonsillectomy. Perhaps, this function is taken over by other tonsils and lymph tissues scattered on the mucous membrane of the throat.
As a rule, after palatal tonsil removal, the child gets less sick with inflammatory diseases because the chronic infection center is eliminated.
Tonsillectomy is also performed in adults who do not have any serious health problems that would prevent the operation. The minimum age limit is 3-4 years, except in mandatory cases. The upper age limit may be different.
Large tonsils: surgery is recommended for tonsils that are large enough to affect breathing, swallowing and speech. Tonsils that cause airway narrowing can cause snoring and sleep apnea, as can enlarged adenoids. This causes health problems later in life.
Recurrent and chronic infections: tonsillectomy is recommended in very recurrent tonsil infections (tonsillitis).
Peritonsillar abscess: If there is a peritonsillar abscess, we drain the abscess and give antibiotic treatment. After recovery, tonsillectomy is prescribed.
Chronic tonsillolithiasis: The tonsils consist of many pockets called lacunae. In some patients, foul-smelling white deposits accumulate. These deposits consist of dead bacterial cells. The treatment is tonsillectomy, but the choice is mostly left to the patient's will.
Asymmetrically enlarged and ulcerated tonsils: Tonsillectomy can be performed on palatal tonsils that appear asymmetrically large and have ulcers. The oncological factor is taken as the main cause.
Tonsillectomy
Chronic Tonsillitis - It is characterized by the occurrence of acute tonsillitis attacks in the patient at least 7 times in one year, or at least 5 times in the last 2 years. During the examination, in addition to the acute picture, the tonsils can be found in an advanced degree. As the tonsil cannot be evaluated in the form of chronic tonsillitis, it cannot be evaluated normally when the tonsils are small.
Chronic Tonsillitis is a pathology found in both children and adults. Infection is caused by Group A Beta Hemolytic Streptococcus (%30-40) or viruses (%15-40).
The disease is more common in children over 2 years of age. Before the age of 2, antibodies passed from the mother to the child, and in adults, the formation of the immune system reduces the frequency of this disease.
Acute Tonsillitis - Tonsillitis symptoms:
-sore throat
- rise in body temperature
- sweating
- trembling
-headache
- joint pains
- redness in the throat
Symptoms of Chronic Tonsillitis:
-bad breath
- frequent acute attacks
-Swelling of neck lymph nodes
- joint pains
Diagnosis is based on all these complaints and oral examination.
